Osen 10! the end. *spoilers* The angsty businessman succumbs to the delicious food prepared by Osen and renegotiates the deal with the honkare maker. The bank gets mad and fails to renew their loan to Osen's restaurant. Osen tries to appeal to the bank manager' and his son's taste buds, but actually fails. I actually laughed when the little boy pulled out a ketchup bottle, and squirted ketchup on all the dishes on the table.
ending thoughts... )
Apparently, the powers that be want me to wait forever. Wait for the 4-6 weeks processing time, wait for a form that 'got lost in the mail', wait for processing of form which got sent to the bottom of the stack, wait for the state to have their meeting, wait for the state website to be fixed. That's okay. 3 pieces of paper might be really hard for morons to process. Simple website fixes might also be really hard for morons. (Not gonna chance submitting credit card info through a messed up site though). I'll wait around watching the Olympics...or scan the heck out of Newtype.

L'Arc~en~Ciel's Shine PV is a cgi mess of a video. I guess there are some pretty parts, but there are too many different visual styles mixing in. The woman looks like a giant next to Hyde..okay, she actually looks like Hyde in a dress with all that cgi. Words with "th" should really be avoided by Japanese singers. Anyway, the song is great. Liked it in Seirei no Moribito and like the full-version even more.

Osen 9! is about katsuobushi. Big business is driving specialty mom and pop shops into debt. Big businessman has katsuobushi angst.

Gourmet 11-13! Sung-chan's team wins the best cow competition due to Bong-joo's team lax treatment of their top-quality cow; ie. They drove too fast which caused the cow to become stressed which was reflected by in its meat.
Where's the beef? )

Gourmet 7-10! Not exactly a show for vegetarians. *spoilers ahead* Sung-chan eating all that raw beef made me gag a little. Sung-chan gets manipulated into competing with Bong-joo in a beef competition. Bong-joo and his lackeys were over-the-top in their asshattery ways. The writers were over-the-top with the first part of the beef contest--the best cow part. Bong-joo and his team of scientists find the perfect cow...ie. the one Sung-chan's team hand-picked first. Sung-chan's team then gets....a cow raised by a sickly little boy. Oh the angst. Don't worry little boy. Happy cows make happy hamburgers.

Photobucket
Osen 7! starts out with a yummy-looking hamburger. Osen and Yocchan experiment with pickled foods in this episode. Tome gets jealous and makes a mistake. Aoi Yu looks very pretty in all those kimonos she gets to wear in this show. This episode alone had about a dozen different ones.

Gourmet 4! I didn't think the old 'who's your real daddy/grandpa' plot would interest me, but actually, it may progress the story beyond the kitchen. Sung Chan and the others prepare for the next competition; country chicken. The previous competition was won by Bong Joo. Then Bong Joo stumbles upon the 'family secret' and then proceeds to angst and get drunk. Of course Sung Chan finds out, too, and angsts. There's a touching flashback to the brothers bathing each other...uh huh...hahaha. And then Sung Chan runs away...like all adult drama characters do when confronted by the truth.

Osen 5-6! Episode 5 strayed from the restaurant to highlight a carpenter who does things the old fashioned way verses big business housing. This show has lovely & rich colors in its cinematography. Osen's kimonos are so pretty. I wish the writing was a tad better. It seems to want to be funny, but falls a short of actual laughs. Episode 6 was unexpectedly charming as Osen goes on an omiai.

Gourmet 3! Okay, it's not as funny and wacky as Yakitate Japan, but y'know, it's very similar. While Sung Chan tries to correct the wrong at the end of the previous episode (feeding the high profile guest some blech soup), his brother and Min Woo get increasingly jealous. All three chefs have another competition basing their dishes on well, the dish. I'm sensing a pattern here. Simplistically, Bong Joo, the older son, creates dishes with high-class ingredients; Min Woo creates pretty dishes; and Azuma Kazuma/Sung Chan takes simple dishes and refreshes them. They all take a new spin on common Korean dishes which make it interesting to see. Chef Oh now has 2 old buddies to help judge.

Osen 4! forgotten that I watched this. Osen gets an offer to expand her restaurant. Bad-actor-Johnny whose name escapes me is all gung-ho about it until he realizes that the restaurant's taste is dependant upon Osen being there.

And a new jdrama season will start next week; the most interesting hyped ones starring the lovable Johnnys.

Shibatora - Koike Teppei stars as a baby-faced cop trying to be a respected detective.

Code Blue - Yamapi stars as a young doctor-in-training.

Maou - Ohno Satoshi and Ikuta Toma play a lawyer and detective, respectively.

um...Apparently being young and cute will let you play any role whether it sounds right or not.

Allison & Lillia 7! *gulp* Had to hold back the barf there. Benedict and Fiona make sparkley eyes at one another as they head to the capital with Allison & Wil.

Change 1! jdrama. Since this was a political drama, I was going to steer clear of this, but Kimutaku and Madonna made me curious. Well, it turned out to be too much of a feel-good, political, change-the-world drama for me. I was dozing a few minutes in and then sped to the climactic speech and obvious win. Kimutaku plays a grade school teacher-turned-politician who leaves his star-filled rural sky to reluctantly move to Tokyo. Madonna's Miles away is the theme song. It's a catchy song.

Osen 3! is about taste versus appearance. Guess which is more important?

TM Revolution's resonance PV is out. Yay for weird short Japanese boy and his techno music comeback. The video seems to be a mesh of old videos and Sony products..ha.

DIY Miso

Osen 2! is about miso. I'm not too fond of Yocchan, since the pretty boy actor that plays him tends to over-act, and his character is kinda whiny, but it is still an interesting show which tries to tie education and family values into an entertaining drama.

Photobucket
I also took a look at the manga from which the drama is loosely based. The manga depicts Osen a little more..well...voluptuously while the other characters got more cartoonish characterizations.

Btw,
Matsujun with a beard is just so wrong.

Osen 1! jdrama. Thought I was done sampling asian dramas, but hey, this has pretty food and pretty clothes. This show celebrates traditional Japanese food and culture in modern times.

The characters ~ Handa Sen/Osen: the young okami who loves her alcohol; Ezaki Yoshio: young, genki boy who wants to become a chef....there are other characters, but they really don't matter.

Photobucket

Quick summary ~ Yoshio/Yocchan quits his flashy chef job to become a chef of 'slow food' at Osen's restaurant. In the first episode, the slowness of their preparation frustrates him until he sees Osen take on the 'queen' of microwaved foods.

Quick opinion ~ The negative ->Other than Osen, the other characters are a little too cliched. Yocchan is probably the worst of them, and he's not that cute. The positive->The food and culture look very attractive..darn, another show that makes me hungry. Osen has a cute personality that is fueled by sake and naivete. And the opening visuals were the kind of colorful flashiness that I like. Still, I'm not sure if I'd continue to watch this despite the entertaining food preparation. If this show focuses on the culture and food, it would be great, but if it steers towards kitchen drama, then in the garbage it goes.

And...
Who Are You? 5-6! Young-In tries to make it on her own even after nice guy offers her a place to stay. Seung-Hyo tries to come to grips with the fact that there is something mentally wrong with him. Il Gun still doesn't make his time in Seoung-Hyo's body worth it. Yeah, these two episodes laid down a thick blanket of sap, angst and snooze.
