Kabukibu! 9-12! Kurusu's infectious enthusiasm for kabuki lures some fun characters into his club. Unfortunately Studio Deen took a cute premise and created a lame paint-by-numbers high school anime. It should have been more like Chihayafuru in how it teaches the viewer about kabuki and how the characters developed. CLAMP's character designs were wasted on very poor animation quality. ~6/10 rating~ While a mostly cute anime, it failed to get me interested in kabuki.

Natsume Yuujinchou Roku 8-11! the end of another season. This continues with sweet one-shot episodes. Episode 10-11 again features Natori. Natsume and Natori go to the house of a deceased exorcist in search of his research papers. Natsume tells Natori about the book. ~9/10 rating~ for a great season. The episodes about his school friends and the last Natori arc were very good ones.

Attack on Titan S2 35-37! The end of season two. Ymir's past is covered. I wouldn't recommend reading the manga since all tension is lost when you know what happens and why people say and do what they do. And there are pretty cool plot points that come up later that I wish I didn't know right now. Mikasa continues to be a badass character. Since Levi is out of commission, Erwin has stepped up in the cool leader department. ~8/10 rating~ *spoilers* We learn that Eren has a or is a 'coordinate' and can command some of the titans. I'm sure it will take another season or longer for him to learn how to use this power. He's still rather a dunce-like character. It's a true shame that the animation quality isn't consistent.

Koe no Katachi is a 2016 jmovie about a young bully who gets shunned by his peers when his antics against a deaf girl goes too far. The movie is clocks in over 2 hours and we see how Ishida slowly matures and learns what friendship is again. You can tell this is based on manga because there seems to be some supporting classmates who seem to be important, but whose problems are not addressed clearly. Anyway, there's a realistic portrayal of the repercussions of bullying. The end isn't too overly saccharine either. The production is decent. My only qualm is that the character design could have used more originality and less shoujo-leanings for such a serious subject matter. ~7/10 rating~
Atom: The Beginning 1-3! is a prequel to Astro Boy and has that nostalgic style to the character designs. Two robotic students are working on a powerful robot with a possible soul. I think the one's sister has a crush on the robot. The first couple episodes are cute enough, but meh. Dropped.

Kado: The Right Answer 2-4! Shindo and the alien talk to the human race. The political blabbing is tedious and this is a little slow. Dropped.

Fukumenkei Noise 1-3! is a typical shoujo love-triangle story where a young girl, Nino, befriends a young boy, Momo, through music. The boy leaves town. The girl can't forget him. She befriends another boy, Yuzu, through music...he also leaves, but they meet again in high school and she joins his band. She still can't forget about Momo. Momo and Yuzu are both songwriters. Yuzu is inspired by Nino. Momo avoids Nino thinking that she will stifle his writing ability. There's tons of angst. Nino has a unique but very irritating voice. Dropped.

Kabukibu! 2-8! Kuro is able to recruit enough to form a school club; a girl who is the class 'prince' and a boy who laments being too manly to dance female roles, a short, fat girl who loves sewing costumes...she's not really fat. So far the characters are pretty cute, but gawd, the animation production is so terrible.

Attack on Titan S2 27-34! Other than Eren, more humans who can turn into titans are hinted at and revealed in this season; the armored titan and colossal titan. You can see that the titans are some sort of human/alchemy/science experiment turned bad, so I wonder when the past will be revealed. The crazy relationships that create crazy scenarios shouldn't be so engaging, but the constant action helps. The fight between Eren and the two titans again is unreal. Cliffhangers are so tough to handle each week.

Natsume Yuujinchou Roku 1-7! continues with episodic one-shot stories. The first is about Natsume as a child after a youkai mistakenly thinks he's doing Natsume a favor by making him a child. Episodes with Natori are interesting. After 6 seasons I still think he might betray Natsume. Episode 6 is a touching episode about Nishimura and Kitamura's initial interactions with Natsume.

oops...forgot to post this one...zzz..

 photo xes25a.jpg photo xes25b.jpg

Tales of Zestiria the X 16-25! the end. Sorey finally finds out that Rose is an assassin, gets over it pretty quickly, and she becomes his squire via contract like Alisha. This season begins a little slowly in terms of action and plot development. This season has focused on Rose and Alisha who have predictably angsty issues that are more political than action-driven. Things get better by episode 20 when everyone heads towards the north to face the Lord of Calamity. Sorey gets a book from Laila written by the prior Sherpard which is about Velvet Crowe. I was hoping for another flashback. Like the other 'Tales of' anime, the wrap up of this series is rushed and a bit of a letdown. I supposed the anime makes far more sense to a fan who has played through the game. *spoilers* Sorey sacrifices himself to save the world in a high-budget, but completely lame final fight. The fight lasted about 5 minutes and the rest of the episode were scenes of the epilogue. ~7/10 rating~ for a nicely set-up, but terribly executed plot. Sorey x Mikleo xoxoxo.

Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan 91-120! the end of this season. Saiki's visit with his grandparents was cute. Love the show's cute cliffhangers. His brother and his summer vacation were also covered in these episodes. While the production value was pretty mediocre, I enjoyed the dry humour. ~7/10 rating~ for silly short episodes.

Natsume Yuujinchou Go 7-11! the end of this season. Episode 8 was a flashback episode focusing on Natori at a time where he tries to educate himself on youkai and exocism. He also met Matoba along the way. The flashback to Touko and Shigeru's past was sweet, too. ~8/10 rating~ for another pleasant season. The elaboration on Natori and Touko's pasts were interesting. After 5 seasons, I shouldn't expect too much conflict, but I wish Natsume did have some sort of end game. We'll see what season 6 brings.

3-gatsu no Lion 7-11! The shogi cat song was cute. Rei and Nikaido tried to teach Hina shogi in episode 7. Episode 9 started off potentially depressing but had an amusing end. The episode after 11 is a recap episode, so the next new episode won't air until next year.
The Full Metal Alchemist live-action trailer is online. Looks nice! I hope it's entertaining like the Kenshin movies, and not like the badly-written Attack on Titan movies.

ClassicaLoid 2-6! Beethoven continues to obsess over gyoza while Mozart is convinced Kanae is in love with him. Sousuke tries to find out what triggers their 'muzik' transformation. Chopin/Cho-chan shows up in episode 3 as a painfully shy character. Liszt also shows up as a busty woman. Schubert is a character obsessed with Beethoven. We find that they were created by Kanae's eccentric father so she doesn't feel lonely...or something like that. Though unusual, the show gets repetitive as Kanae continues to worry about money and continually tries to kick the classicaloids out. Dropped.

Drifters 2-4! We learn that the ones pulling the strings are the megane blond, Murasaki, and evil-looking, black-haired girl, Easy. Episode 2-3 continues scenes of extreme violence with weird comedic breaks. 3 was pretty confusing with all the different Drifters showing up, but near the end, they reveal that they are wanted to fight the 'Enders' who are insane and evil Drifters. I don't know enough of the historical figures to care. Dropped.

Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan 41-90! 45 was about how Saiki can sorta cheat on exams to stay unnoticed at school, and how it backfires on him when he places below brainless Nendo. The next story arc covers the school trip to Osaka. It's nice to see that despite his internal grumblings, Saiki somewhat cares for his classmates. Looks like this show got more episodes on order which is fine by me since each 4 minute episode is fun to watch.

Fune wo Amu 3-5! Majime's landlady's granddaughter comes to live with her and becomes Majime's love interest. The characters also overcome the threat of the dictionary becoming cancelled.

Natsume Yuujinchou Go 2-6! Small youkai children are the cutest and Natsume can't help himself from solving their problems. In episode 3-4, Matoba manipulates Natsume into doing what he wants but fails to get him to join the Matoba clan. Unfortunately, there are some large plot points like Natsume's grandmother, Matoba's grand plan, if any, and Natori's shiki tattoo that seem to be forever unanswered.

3-gatsu no Lion 2-6! We are introduced other shogi players and their outgoing personalities. Episode 4 was about how Nikaido meets the sisters and it was adorable. And Rei tells us about his past and how he was adopted into a shogi-obsessed family after his biological family passed away in a car accident in episode 5. This anime hasn't really educated the viewer on how to play shogi yet, but apparently Rei is very good. Ah ha, the live-action movie trailer is up. Looks good!
 photo classicaloid1a.jpg photo classicaloid1b.jpg

ClassicaLoid 1! one of the most absurd anime premises I've seen since Penguin Revolution. Kanae lives in her late grandmother's mansion with two friends of her father, Beethoven and Mozart. Her 'musician' childhood friend, Sousuke, also spends an awful amount of time at her house, too. In episode 1, she has to sell the property due to financial reasons. Just as the construction crew starts, they cause Beethoven to drop the gyoza he was cooking, and he angrily does a Sailor Moon transformation into a Classicaloid. He magically convinces them to leave and Kanae et al continue to live in the house. There's even dancing mech. Cut to Bach sitting in the dark who looks like the bad guy. The production and background music are very colorful and fun.

 photo drifters1a.jpg photo drifters1a.jpg

Drifters 1! Seemingly random Japanese military figures are plucked out of history and thrown into a new world by a mysterious guy in glasses. The elf-eared locals call them Drifters. The show starts off with some serious & violent fighting, but after the halfway point you get some silly comedy. It's a stylish and unique.

 photo natsugo1a.jpg photo natsugo1b.jpg

Natsume Yuujinchou Go 1! the 5th season seamlessly continues where the they left off three years ago. Natsume continues to encounter the supernatural and helps them. In episode 1, Natsume seems to be focused on learning more about his grandmother, Reiko. Maybe we'll get her whole story this season?

 photo march2a.jpg photo march2b.jpg

3-gatsu no Lion 1! Can't go wrong with the production by Shaft. It's visually lovely. This is about a young shogi player, Rei, who lives by himself. There's an overly genki family who tends to watch out for him. I'm fond of Bump of Chicken, so I enjoy both the opening and ending songs. I also liked the French song in the beginning. A two part live action movie is a scheduled for 2017.
Very sad I couldn't see Laruku at NYC over the weekend; positive NYTimes and Fuse reviews (the Ken video at the Fuse link was funny). Looks like their world tour ends with 2 concerts in Hawaii...interesting.

Natsume Yuujinchou Shi 13! the end...again. What the writer does really well is make you feel sympathy for Natsume...every single episode...for the same reason over and over. And you don't get tired of it..even though it's the same thing..it must be the cat. Brilliant, really. In this episode Natsume remembers a bit of his childhood and finds his parents' home. I liked this season as well as the previous. The story arcs tied a few more characters together. I was still waiting for more development on Reiko...but even the manga hasn't gotten that far. ~8/10 rating

Hunter x Hunter 2012 24! features a cute flashback with Killua and Canary.

Hungry 10! It was very amusing that the landlady brought her own salt & pepper and sprinkled it all over Eisuke's food...and kicks them out of the building. Eisuke goes to France to train.

One more episode left in these shows...

Natsume Yuujinchou Shi 12! Natsume and Nyanko head towards Natsume's parents' home before it gets sold. They stop by a relative's home to pick up a key. Enjoyable to watch Nyanko walking around on his stubby little feet.

Chihayafuru 24! Chihaya and the club watch the Queen's match on the tv in Taichi's room. The chubby queen was cute. They then turn to the Master's match. No gender equality in this game?

Natsume Yuujinchou Shi 11! the arc involving Natsume's parents!

Aquarion EVOL 11! It's about time Mikage provoked Kagura into doing something; turning into a mad animal and then taking a mech and shooting at his people. Why does the next episode look like a filler.

Chihayafuru 23! Since nobody of any significance got through to the qualifying round, they actually take a break and spend Christmas Eve with their classmates. Ouch Taichi...gotta love that character.

Last Exile: Ginyoku no Fam 19! Well, that's one way of achieving peace. And ok, Sara is another key to Exile; the big one. So there are three of them running about. Luscinia basically wipes the battleground with Sara. It would have been more effective if the animation quality were not so bad.

Natsume Yuujinchou Shi 10! This has been the season of pink-colored bromance. More fuel for the Natori x Natsume fanbase in this episode. Houziki and Fudzuki are a cute youkai pair, too. The animation production hasn't been too good this season...:(

Aquarion EVOL 10! Jinsomething infiltrates the Aquarion school. These filler episodes are really dull and pointless, but there is colorful background music that peeps in just when you think about taking a nap. The only character worth anything is the dark-skinned girl who contemplates which boys are semes or ukes.

Chihayafuru 22! Good anime, but the past few episodes haven't been as uplifting when you watch the main characters easily lose focus and thus, lose games. Good thing it's over soon.

Aquarion EVOL 9! filler episode about Andy and Mix. Zzz.

Natsume Yuujinchou Shi 9! A nice arc with Natori. Natsume pretends to be a god to help win a contest and save a mountain.

Hungry 7! Some (pseudo-Michelin) food critics eat as Gasterea and later, Eisuke's newly named Harapeko Kitchen. Eisuke unknowingly blows his chance by fighting with his friends.

Saikou no Jinsei no Owarikata 4-6! Caught up with this show. It moves a little more quickly as background noise. The problem with Masapyon's younger brother and younger sister are resolved in these episodes. Sleeping with her teacher...meh, whatever. I'm interested in the old guy who is implied to be a figment of Masapyon's imagination.

Chihayafuru 20! Torture Taichi Tuesdays are fun. Taichi tries to win another regional tournament so he can advance to class A. Arata is there. The interaction between him, Taichi and Chihaya is <3

Nisemonogatari 8! Araragi and his sisters certainly win the trophy for their perversions; toothbrush, really? The episode's first half was pretty funny. The second half descended into uuuh, but thankfully, they get interrupted. Very funny episode and Tsukihi's opening song was cute.

Natsume Yuujinchou Shi 8! is about the megane grey-haired female exorcist who isn't as bad as she first appeared.

Aquarion EVOL 8! So the bad guys are from a planet where all the females have died. And the pilots find that fighting naked heightens their senses. The rationale for the fanservice is ridiculous, but funny. There are times that the ridiculousness is more stupid than funny. Hopefully, the writers error more on the side of humor than stupid.

Last Exile: Ginyoku no Fam 16-17! Sorush and Orang's love story...in one of the dullest battles on this show yet. And then all it takes for the war against Luscinia's allies to end is Augusta's letter. Please push Fam and Augusta Sara off a cliff.

No HxH this week. *weep*

Been watching Yamashita Tomohisa's Route 66 travel show and it's adorable. Being a fan of travel shows and rambling jpop idols who encounter 'American' culture for the first time, Yamapi's trip from Chicago to LA via Route 66 is up there in entertainment value. I was especially amused at the whole loaf of ham he bought at the grocery store's lunchmeat counter.

Natsume Yuujinchou Shi 7! Natsume x Tanuma x Natori party. The production quality was lacking, but at least there was decent fanfic fuel.

Aquarion EVOL 7! The frog doll's character is the focus of this episode. The character and her powers are amusing. The episodic storylines only work because of the fanservice and the humor. Usually, just when the episode starts getting boring, it throw in something silly to liven it up.

Chihayafuru 19! Taichi never gets a break, but I'm sure all the fangirls are rooting for him. Chihaya reminds me of Kyoko from Skip Beat when she has those extreme facial expressions.

Natsume Yuujinchou Shi 6! Nyanko pretending to be Natsume cracked me up. Natsume gets into trouble...again. Excellent episode.

Aquarion EVOL 6! a Shrade-centric episode. Extremely corny, but not in a good way this time; barely funny. He looks like a character who would turn to the dark side fairly easily; I hope it's soon, too...and hopefully, his BL buddy, Cayenne, is there for him. Kagura x Amata x Mikono = zzz. Is thinking that Kagura and Amata being two sides of a reincarnation too obvious?
