Antique kmovie! takes the best parts of the manga, anime, jdrama and throws in a bit of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the Johnny Depp version) in there. There's even a musical number. Charming movie.

Comparisons~ I enjoyed each version of Fumi Yoshinaga's manga. The jdrama focused on the slice-of-life aspect of how cake makes people happy. It was an entertaining drama at that time. Kanda played by Takizawa Hideaki seemed like the main character back then. The anime with its flawed, but interesting animation, was a faithful rendition of the manga which revolved around Tachibana's kidnapping. The kmovie is a more of a Hollywood-dramatization of the manga with it's fast-pacing and flashy shots...all yummy and delicious. It definitely took the boys + cake formula for eye-candy, and raised it to the next level.

Tachibana= Jin-hyuk
Ono= Sun-woo
Kanda= Ji-beum
Chikage= Su-Young

In the kmovie version, the visuals are brightly colorful. It reminds me of Amelie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Chocolat. If you've watched the short k-film, Boy Meets Boy, there's a similar style to this movie where a character's imagination brings a fantasy to life..with song. This movie seemed to emphasize the relationship between Jun-hyuk and Sun-woo more so than any of the other versions. The gay factor was heightened, and the kidnapping was lightly brushed over.

Because this was a movie, the relationships between all four characters didn't seem as solid as it could have been. Ji-beum and Su-Young's roles are definitely downplayed. And the writers referred to, but didn't show any of the side stories. That's the clumsy part to how the kmovie was written. Jin-hyuk played by Joo Ji-hoon (from Goong) talks about how cake makes people happy at the end, but there were no defining moments a la side story in the movie that shows this. The movie seems to show that people visit Antique for the hot boys. I'm not sure Jin-hyuk was truly happy after he regained his memories and with his situation at the end. Jin-hyuk has a more extreme aversion to cake than his previous incarnation, but overall, he is a faithful rendition of Tachibana. Sun-woo played by Kim Jae-wook (from Coffee Prince) is plain hot. Ono in the manga and anime was pretty corny, but Sun-woo makes the demonic gay look cool. Even the dancing in the rain scene with Su-young wasn't as painful as it was in the anime. Jean-Batiste...though a bad guy, was also hot. Su-young...poor guy, is just comic relief and not a good one at that. I don't think he was as 'into' Sun-woo as Chikage is supposed to be. Ji-beum also lacked the charm the original character contained. To make it a coherant movie, they sacrificed some character development for Jin-hyuk's story and fanservice--->good choice.

I'd have to give this a ~8/10 rating~ because it's easily rewatchable. It's nice to see Koreans remaking Japanese entertainment with their own flashy twist.
