You Are My Pet kmovie! based on the manga Kimi wa Pet (please never ever use the US title). Eun-yi (Sumire) is a hard-working career woman who is subject to jealousy from her peers. She picks up a young man, In-ho, in a box outside her apartment and he agrees to be her pet, Momo. There was a small change in how they meet in the beginning of the movie, and various changes throughout; mostly cutting out the side characters' roles. And yay, Jang Geun-suk (Momo) sings in this movie. The flaws lie with Kim Ha-Neul who plays Eun-yi rather unconvincingly. Eun-yi is less of the hard-arse career worman than Sumire was, and doesn't seem in love with either Momo or whatshisname. The movie also focuses too much on the fluffy parts of the story. It makes it rather tedious to sit through. On the upside, the movie is rather attractive and there's an unexpected musical element at the end, but I do prefer the tv jdrama. ~7/10 rating~

Saikou no Jinsei no Owarikata 1! Masato is a regional manager of a chain of pubs played by Yamashita Tomohisa(heeey, it's been a long time since I've seen Yamapi in a drama). His father suddenly dies leaving behind the family funeral parlor business. Masato's older brother had disappeared, and he has three other siblings to take care of. The death of one of his subordinates makes him take on the business. He also befriends a policewoman which gives the drama a little more CSI feel. Episode 1 was interesting enough for this to go on my maybe-list.

Hungry 2! Eisuke finally has a concept for his restaurant and has normal guests. This continues to be lighthearted and yummy to watch. Plus, subs are done well and fast...it's a keeper.

Going through Kdrama withdrawal led me to 2008 Jang Geun-seok movies.

Doremefasolasido kmovie! starts off as all high school romantic dramas do. Girl meets boy. Hate turns to love. Insert a third wheel with a healthy dose of angst and ta-da, it's a movie. The movie starts off in a cute manner as Jeong-won, a part-timer at an amusement park, meets Eun-gyu, bratty guy at the park. Jang Geun-seok plays Eun-gyu who is also in a band, so we get to hear him sing some likable rock songs. They just start a relationship when Jeong-won meets Eun-gyu's bassist, Hee-won, a former friend whom she caused past/current grief. This all plays out believably until the last third of the movie when the soap opera writers came in to wrap up the movie. The good thing is that the movie's pacing is very quick, so you only cringe for a bit near the end. Sadly, the soundtrack does not have Doremi's versions of the songs. Here's one of the happy songs. ~7/10 rating~ only recommended to Jang Geun-seok fans.

Baby and Me kmovie! loosely based on the jp manga. Jang Geun-seok plays a delinquent, Joon-soo. His parents, tired of dealing with him, run away to live at the spa. Joon-soo, unperturbed, is shopping in the grocery one day, and finds a baby dropped off in his cart with a note saying that it is his. There are some moments of comedy and cute, but most of the movie is about all the bad choices Joon-soo makes while taking care of the baby. A random genius girl is slid into the movie to occasionally help him out. The movie kinda goes nowhere with the cute trying to keep the audience's attention, but the writing isn't all that great. I think all the highlights are featured in the trailer. ~7/10 rating~ again, only recommended to Jang Geun-seok fans.

Antique kmovie! takes the best parts of the manga, anime, jdrama and throws in a bit of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the Johnny Depp version) in there. There's even a musical number. Charming movie.

Slumdog Millionaire movie - The quote, "Feel-good movie of the year," gives away the one of two possible endings, but yes, great movie. I approve of the Hare Hare Yukai method of making people want to watch credits.

Boy Meets Boy short film (12 minutes) - love at first sight between two very pretty Korean boys plus no dialogue...PLUS a gay-boy-loving fairy who has the best song ever; "Be careful when you hook up on the streets" may not be the title, but are great lyrics. Okay, it was a little creepy. The one boy looks like he is in middle school.
Although there were a few of making-of videos out, there's an actual trailer out for the Antique k-movie. I think 3 of the 4 actors look too young or fresh-faced to play the manga characters, but hey, they are hot. It seems that much of the original story will be included including the 'demonic gay' parts...which is what the trailer is about; gay bars + delicious cake = chick flick?.

Soul Eater 25! Shinigami gathers 4 of his 8 deathscythes. The kids play basketball. Cute episode. Interestingly, Maka's father is said to be a trusted deathscythe & senpai to others, but conversely, keeps on being portrayed as an idiotic father. He wasn't very active in Stein's hands, so I hope we see him powered up in latter fights.

How marvelous and wonderful is this bit of news? Antique (by Fumi Yoshinaga) is being made into a Korean film for release next year. Joo Ji Hoon (from Goong) will be the owner and Kim Jae Wook (from Coffee Prince) will be the pâtissier. I'm not familiar with the other 2 actors, but I'm excited to see how this turns out. The jdrama continues to be a favorite of mine.
There's a trailer out for the Hwang Jiny movie. Although the kdrama was pretty, it had its tedious moments. Looks like the movie livens up the story with some battles.

Here's an interesting link. It's a page that lists filming locations and how to get there. Click on other dramas to see some of the prettiest areas in Korea.

Fly Daddy (kmovie) is a remake of the Japanese movie, Fly Daddy Fly. After that overdose on almost all of Lee Jun Ki's works months back, little did I expect his new movie would be running around on the internet so soon.

Hwangjiny 13-14! I began rewatching the first few episodes with subtitles. The gisaeng training is more interesting and Eun-ho, is still bland, but I'm assuming his pure love is what remains in Jiny's memories after his death. In 13 and 14, Jiny and her rival squabble some more before the dance competition (not really a competition..can't think of the word right now). What happens?

Windstruck - kmovie - is the 2nd movie out of 3 romantic dramas I seem to have on my bored-out-of-my-mind list. As previously stated, the director/writer, Kwak Jae-yong, and female actress, Jeon Ji-hyung, have done My Sassy Girl and Daisy together. This is the middle movie out of the three. This starts out as a comedy as Kyung-jin, a female police officer, mistakenly chases down a dorky high school teacher, Myung-woo, believing him to be a purse-snatcher. Kwak Jae-yong is definitely a manipulative writer as he throws in the unexpected right when the story starts getting boring and almost predictable. In this movie, unlike the other movies, the unexpected is very close to being random. There are many hm? moments. *spoilers* About halfway through the movie you know Myung-woo will die. He says he wants to become the wind when he goes and the director definitely gives him plenty of opportunity to die. His actual death was surprising. From that point on, there is no more comedy and it gets kinda sappy. Towards the light...go! The director does use beautifully arranged settings to move the film along those sappy places. *more spoilers* There's a nod to his first popular film, My Sassy Girl, as Kyung-jin's new potential soulmate is the main male character from that movie. If you are planning a night of asian chick-flix , I'd recommend the films by Kwak Jae-yong.

one more film to go, j-movie...don't know if i can make it...uga uga

ETA: 20 minutes in and fastforwarding and I gave up on...
Crying Out Love in the Center of the World - jmovie - Attempted to watch this, since it kept showing up whenever I looked for some good live-action media. It's basically high school schmoop and angst. Girl and boy fall in love. Girl has incurable disease. Girl dies. Boy angsts and angsts....nothing else happens. All aspects of the film were bland. Too pure and sad for me.

~ah, I've mushed up enough brain cells today.
Hitomi's new PV, Ai no Kotoba, was fun to watch. The dog scene is squeaky. The song is a cute, simple jpop tune; tons more likable than Hitomi's 'Japanese Girl' song.

Daisy - kmovie - finished watching this movie and it was pretty satisfying. A female painter living in the Netherlands becomes the love interest for a professional assassin and a member of the Interpol police. The director/writer, Kwak Jae-Yong, and the female actor, Jeon Ji-hyun, are from 'My Sassy Girl'. The two main male characters are average-looking guys with similar badly grown moustaches. It's obvious what will happen...someone has to die, but the story is told uniquely. Each character gets their moment of monologue time. The camera cuts are interesting and the pacing of the movie is good. The romance part of the romantic drama is pretty low, but it's believable enough that the characters 'love' each other. Although I think the super-nice-guy-with-the-cool-car assassin is the obvious pick, he does get an odd crazed look and then the normal policeman starts looking a little more hotter. Kwak's 'Windstruck' is next on my list. It also features Jeon Ji-hyun who I don't particularly like or dislike, but she seems to be movies that sound interesting and get decent reviews.

The King and The Clown or The King's Man is thus far my favorite Korean movie. It used to be My Sassy Girl. I have to admit that I don't find many Korean movies truly entertaining. Kong-gil (played by Lee Joon-Ki who looks very cute on his homepage) is the object of everyone's attention in this period drama. Jangsung is the 'hero' character in this movie. The pair of them are street performers/clowns in Joseon Korea. After an incident, they head to Seoul and make it big by putting on acts that mock the king.

First impressions: Beautiful costumes and very nice scenery make this a visually stunning movie. Koreans' lewd and crude humor is prominent in the entertainers' plays. It's quite funny all throughout the movie. The dialogue easily keeps your attention. It's cleverly written and I like how they reveal explanations to everything in bits and pieces through the clowns' performances. The 'gay' is pretty much downplayed once the movie develops. The focus is mainly on the King's deterioration and the supposed 'corruption' in the court. Kong-gil's character is likable in that he seems to sympathize with the crazed King. Jangsung keeps trying to protect Kong-gil, but really Kong-gil was tainted already..(I guess that's a spoiler). Although they allude to more graphic action, the only action you see is a kiss that cuts away before you know what's going on. [livejournal.com profile] akujunkan mentioned a cut scene...which probably will depress fangirls. But...really, there was an incredible amount of restraint in regards to the homosexual subject matter; so much so that I thought near the end that the King's Man could have been referring to the scribe.

I was worried that this would be an uncomfortable, sad movie that Farewell, My Concubine was, but it wasn't. The whole movie portrayed a hopefulness with the clowns. It was inevitable what happened to the King, but the movie's editing left an optimistic feeling at the end. The movie was so well-made and enjoyable that it became the highest grossing Korean movie ever. I read that people thought the fangirls might have contributed to that number. I thought that Kong-gil had a flabby stomach in the beginning and wasn't as cute at the movie promo pictures depicted him as...ha ha. He could've used some sit-ups.

I thought that this movie was going to get a USA release, but haven't read any news regarding this yet. Maybe I only thought that because it was reviewed in the NYTimes a few months ago. Anyway, I recommend this to anyone who wants a funny, action-filled, historical drama with a touch of romance. (The foreign DVDs are out now) +++
