A study of serious proportions

Been up since 6am...
There's rarely much fan-gushing here. Well, that's a little lie, since I think I like to babble about Laruku and Gundam and a random anime or drama or two. I have a gush about some cd dramas hiding in the bushes, too, but--
--random people have f-ed me; possibly, from the Clamp com, so here's a random gush about a Clamp-related topic...
Compared to other anime figures like those Nendoroid ones or Chara fortune figures, those CLAMP in 3-D Land figures didn't really hold any appeal to me. Although they(movic) put a lot of detail into them, they chose pretty awful outfits for most of them, their faces looked odd and really? they looked cheaply made. I guess if you did in fact, live in Japan, they would be cheap, but importing them is expensive.

Anyhow, I succumbed to the allure of Seishirou and picked up his 3-D figure and Kiseki figure, so that I could chew on his head. When I got them, I saw the 'Made in China' mark and rethought my slobbering plans.

Here's a little review. The Kiseki chess piece is ok. It's a rubber figure on a plastic stand. The face is somewhat carefully painted on. The odd & suspicious thing is that the black rubber has specks of grey in it like glitteror something poisonous-ack. It's not worth the $30 Tokyopop slapped on the whole package, but I got it half off and it was worth it that price. Tokyopop has lowered the price to $20 on volumes 7-12. The mook/book has a decent interview about the origins and development of Tokyo Babylon, nice illustrations, plus an interview with another person about Clamp and a wtf random comic by Clamp.
The 3-D figure is made out of a harder plastic and machine-painted..which is a tad off in some parts. The reason why the face looks odd is the shape and size of the eyes. The eyes shouldn't have been made convex..protruding from the face. Another reason why that both the 3-D and Kiseki figures don't look perfectly cute is the nose placement...or the existence of a nose to begin with. In other cutesy SD toy figures, the best ones hardly have a nose. This figures noses look either too low or maybe the eyes are too close together.

I also got the Subaru 3-D and Kiseki figures because Sei-chan needed his uke. He looks a little more in-character, but I still prefer the Kiseki figures in both cases. The Kiseki Subaru came with the Angelic Layer interview in which CLAMP claims they prefer drawing cute girls over pretty boys...right.

The fanservicey part of the 3-D figures is that Sei-chan and Subaru snap together. There seems to be a space for possible Hokuto figure.

I once got a Chii figure with one of the volumes of Chobits. It was tiny and very nicely made. It was also a rubbery substance..waaait, is that PVC? me->no knowledge of figure collecting. Wish that both figures looked a little more carefully made like the Chii figure or like this random figure. Totally cute with a crazed expression and more rounded face.

But just comparing the Kiseki figures and 3-D Land figures, the Kiseki ones seem a little more well-made.
Anyway, I'm sorta disappointed the way Tsubasa is written. Don't they have like a hundred more feathers to find or is Fuuma hiding most of them up his butt. It seems they are more traveling to different worlds than alternate universes. I'd want to see Syaoran, Kurogane, Fay & Sakura meeting another version of themselves...rather than twins, clones, splitted souled-versions. Tomoyo meeting Tomoyo was pretty boring. Well in all honesty, I'd rather see Sei-chan meeting Sei-chan. How lovely would that be? Smutastic, of course.

In conclusion, Polysic's Rocket song is cute or is it the Moyashimon that make it cute?

Date: 2007-11-29 03:52 am (UTC)I second the figures having dumb faces. I felt very little want for them this summer, even when I held them, because every other damn ass figurine in any store was much, much cuter. Boo.
