Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan 16-40! in episode 16, Saiki meets a boy who can see ghosts and knows of Saiki's powers. He becomes Saiki's apprentice despite Saiki's reluctance. Saiki's deadpan reactions and actions to avoid his friends are funny. Sports day at the school was especially funny. The mini comedic insights to Saiki's life are fun to watch.

Mob Psycho 100 4-8! Mob faces another student with psycho powers but tries not to use his powers. He inadvertently humiliates him, but gains an ally. Mob's brother suddenly develops powers after some intense brooding and jealousy towards Mob. His brother seems to be going to the dark side until a more powerful psychic beats up Mob, and kidnaps the brother. There are some comedic moments, but unlike Saiki, this veers towards drama and action.

91 Days 4-7! Nero continues to search for those responsible for his family's deaths. He currently works with the one of the people who tried to kill him in the past. The pacing is somewhat lethargic in this show. There are some nice twists as Nero manipulates the people around him...though I suspect they are actually suspicious of him. Episode 7.5 was a recap episode.

 photo xes5a.jpg photo xes5b.jpg

Tales of Zestiria the X 4-8! Episode 4 ended with dark hurricane heading towards Sorey and the capital. Episode 5-6 jumped off into Tales of Berseria and Velvet Crowe, a woman who is on a prison island full of demons. She is kept alive to devour the demons with her demon hand. Had to wiki this twist and apparently the new 2016 RPG game, Tales of Berseria, takes place long before Tales of Zestiria and sets up the history of the same universe. The main bad guy seems to be Artorius, the people's savior and main exorcist. The terms of both stories seem loosely lifted from the King Arthur legend. Episode 7 returns to Sorey and Mikleo with a strong bromantic episode. Episode 8 introduces new seraphs and defines dragons as seraphs who have turned to the dark side...ha. There are definitely lovely background settings in this show.

 photo arslan8a.jpg photo arslan8b.jpg

Arslan Senki: Fuujin Ranbu 5-8! the end of this semi-season. Arslan and gang are in a merchant-filled, wealthy, port city. They bump the corrupt mayor-type person from power, and also solve the pirate problem. It's all going very well for them. Episode 6 brings Alfreed's brother, Etoile, and Princess Erina back into the story. It's interesting how easily the author manipulates the characters. By episode 8, all groups, Hermes, Arslan and Andragoras head toward Ecabatana to claim it as their own. Unfortunately, the anime has caught up with the manga. Apparently, there are two manga adaptations of the light novel series. The anime is following the one by Hiromu Arakawa (Hagaren), so no more anime until she finishes. ~7/10 rating~ While fun to watch, the anime production is still quite inconsistent and bad at times.

Nanatsu no Taizai: Seisen no Shirushi 1! Like Arslan, this is another mini-season before a full season. Wasn't too fond of the first season, but might as well fill my time with something silly. Episode 1 re-introduces the characters as they try to catch Hawk, the disgruntled mini-pig.
Lengthy anime post ahead...

 photo relife1.jpg
Apparently this studio is experimenting with an anime app and released the whole season at once a la Netflix-style. It'll be interesting if this release model pans out for them..I think the anime pirates like it.
ReLIFE 1-13! the end. Initially thought that this would be a time-travel anime, but it's more of a science experiment that turns a young, jaded adult, Kaizaki Arata, from a 27 year old adult into a 17 year old high school student. He will redo a year in high school, but in his current time period. His appearance is the only thing that changed which becomes apparent when he comedically struggles in gym class. It's a cute anime with some comedy and shoujo-esque drama. The minamalistic background piano music is pretty fun to listen to. I also thought it was a nice nostalgic touch that every episode ended with a jpop song that would have been popular 10 years ago. ~8/10 rating The show spent a bit of time on Kariu's problems which slowed the pace down, and there was a drop in production quality. As a warning, the anime just ends after everyone becomes friendly. I guess viewers can read the manga to see what happens to Arata. Anyway, it was a cute shoujo anime.

 photo ab6f7ad7-09c2-4612-a32c-9a1a7562470b.jpg

Orange 1! a group of high school friends get letters from their future selves telling them something in regards to a new transfer student. Girl falls in love with boy within the first episode...cue the eye roll. The show already reveals that Kakeru isn't with the group of friends in the future and that his (we can predict) death is preventable. Dropped because well, I spoiled myself below...

 photo orangemovie.jpg

Orange jmovie! saw that this was made into a live-action movie last year, and decided to check it out. As the anime hinted, the main female character, Naho, is a bit of a wimp. Even with a letter from her future self with a list of regrets and telling her what to do to save Kakeru, she stumbles with the letter. As a side note, a class in time travel and parallel worlds would have been awesome in high school. ~6/10 rating~ for a fairly predictable, sweet shoujo story. The movie was about 30 minutes too slow, but well-cast. Apparently giving your past self a note with a list of regrets doesn't help when your past self is a moron most of the time. She could have made the movie last 5 minutes if she pointed out that regret #1 was the most important step. It was predictable that the group was going to save Kakeru at the very last possible moment.

 photo saiki1a.jpg photo saiki1b.jpg

Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan 1-15! is a funny 4 minute show airing during the week and then compiled on Sunday. Episodes 1-2 introduce us to Kusuo Saiki, a young high school boy with psychic, telepathy, telekinesis powers and his laid-back, kooky parents. Episodes 3 and on introduce us to his classmates and other people who are unaware of his powers.

 photo mob1a.jpg photo mob1b.jpg

Mob Psycho 100 1-3! is another anime about a young high school boy with strong psychic powers. It is implied that he will explode or go 100% psycho one day. Unlike Saiki, Mob doesn't know how powerful he is. He is taken advantage of by a young adult who runs a exorcism business. His boss pretends to have powers and pretends to be teaching Mob. This anime has a fairly unique animation style that is very raw in its drawings. The mangaka is ONE who also wrote One Punch Man, so the humor is fairly fun to watch. By watching Mob and Saiki, you can see how two authors approach the same type of main character differently, but still humorously.

 photo fuki1.jpg

Fukigen na Mononokean 1-2! also not on my list but looked cute. A young boy, Ashiya, starts high school by finding a fluffy animal on the side of the road that seems to suck out his energy to the point where he is missing days of school. He sees an ad for an exorcist, Abeno, who is hiring and calls him for an exorcism. The exorcist in a fashion similar to xxxHOLiC coerces the student into working for him. Episode 2 emphasized the fact thtat the Abeno prefers to work for money while the Ashiya has a soft heart. It's not quite that fun, so dropped.

 photo servamp1.jpg

Servamp 1! is about a young, motherless boy (story didn't say anything about the father), who grows up to be good at everything. His classmates tend to pawn off school projects on him since he feels it's 'simpler' to do them on his own. He picks up a cat on the street who turns out to be a vampire. Another vampire attacks, the boy and cat form a 'servamp' contract. I think I would have liked this when I was 12. Dropped.

 photo 91d1a.jpg photo 91d1b.jpg

91 Days 1-3! Ah ha, a mafia story. A young boy witnesses the murder of his parents and younger brother and years later, seeks revenge during the Prohibition era. Style and characters remniscent of Baccano, but there's no humor.

 photo zes1.jpg photo zes2.jpg

Tales of Zestiria the X 0-3! Not on my initial list but I'm a sucker for big budget anime shows and ufotable's production. There's a sword in a stone, 'LadyLake', mysterious mist, a badass-looking dragon, a badass princess, swords and guns. The prologue episode with Princess Alisha won me over.. Episode 1 introduces the main character, Sorey, and his seraph friend, Mikeo, who explore old architecture and find the princess who wanders in after the dragon destroys her comrades and the nearby town. Not sure what's going on and not really interested in the rpg game, but it's very Final Fantasy-like, and still very well-made. The last 'Tales of' series was decent, and this looks pretty good. The original game opening has a catchy rockin' opening by Superfly. The anime has a decent opening by Flow, but the original is more badass.

 photo arslansen1a.jpg photo arslansen1b.jpg

Arslan Senki: Fuujin Ranbu 1-4! continues that tale of Arslan. Gieve and the man in the silver mask hunt down a legendary sword that belongs to the true king, but a group from the evil Church steal it away. Arslan and his army win another battle, but in episode 2, the king, Arslan's 'father', is able to escape on his own and tracks Arslan down. He orders him to raise an army of 50k which is supposedly a banishment. No worries as Arslan's friends decide to help him. This really needs a bigger budget.

 photo bananya1.jpg

Bananya 1! is a 3-minute show. The banana cat bounces around looking cute.

 photo sinbad13.jpg

Magi: Sinbad no Bouken 9-13! the end of this season. In episode 9, Sinbad and his crew are trying to trade with a country that has precious metals. After technically defeating the king who also has a dungeon weapon, Sinbad gains another companion in the form of the king's enthusiastic son. Episode 11 starts their adventure in a country run by women. He is also able to draw up an alliance with them. Thus, the season ends with Sinbad trading with three elusive countries, and gaining a good number of new companions. ~7/10 rating for a good-natured adventure anime.
 photo arslan23a.jpg photo arslan23b.jpg

Arslan Senki 16-25! the end of season one. A battle against the war elephants leads to a one on one battle for the throne. Daryun proves again to be unbeatable and Rajendra is made king. He predictably betrays Arslan, but is again outsmarted by Narsus. This side trip seems a bit off-topic, but adds another unexpected & loyal follower to Arslan's camp. Episode 19 focuses on Hermes who is possibly the rightful king of Pars. He has the task of defeating the religious nutcase and his followers. The gender reveal in episode 20 was amusing and what eventually happens is predictable but nice. And Arslan finally heads to Escabana to take back the capital. He first takes the Keep of Saint Emmanuel back from the Lusitanians in the climax of this season. There is a lot of good fortune on Arslan's side, but due to the title of the story, you do expect that he wins every battle. ~8/10 rating~ for a speedy historical fantasy story. The production was inconsistent, but the characters, story and action made this enjoyable. Another year until the next season?

 photo orem23a 2.jpg photo orem23a.jpg

Ore Monogatari!!! 1-24! the end. This is a really funny shoujo anime about a large, not traditionally attractive first year high school boy, Takeo. He's popular with other guys since they admire him as a manly man, but his romantic crushes always fall for his best friend/neighbor, Sunakawa, a typical ikemen. In episode 1, he happens to save a girl, Yamato, from a groper. He thinks she has a crush on Suna and decides to help them get together. This is nice that Takeo and Yamato reveal their feelings by episode 3. The production and humor are great. If you need a pick-me-up, this will definitely make you laugh or at least smile. Takeo is awesome and the supporting characters are quite likable. ~8/10 rating~ Apparently, there is a live-action movie in the works which looks ridiculous, but yeah, I want to see it.

Akagami no Shirayukihime 3-12! the end of season 1. Shirayuki passes the court herbalist test, and becomes an apprentice to a young genius herbalist. So far, the episodes have been diabetes sweet. Prince Raj from the first episode is invited by Zen's older brother, Izana, to liven things up. Episode 6 was pretty amusing in that regard. Episode 8-9 flashes back to when Mitsuhide was assigned to guard Zen. The last few episodes culminate to a kiss and to Shirayuki and Zen admitting their feelings for one another. There weren't any real big conflicts or antagonists in this show, but it was mildly amusing overall. ~7/10 rating~ for mild romance.

Junjou Romantica 3 3-12! the end. Misaki and a friend from college go to meet their favorite mangaka...who takes an interest in Misaki..shocking, of course. Misaki also starts the interview process at Marukawa Publishing and passes. Episode 4 features the Terrorist couple. Miyagi asks Shinobu to move in. And coincidentally, episode 7 features the Mistake couple and they decide to move in together. Episode 10 features the Egoist couple. They are so cute. Most of this season focuses on Misaki and Usagi's insecurities about their ability to stay a couple as Misaki approaches graduation.~7/10 rating~ for soft yaoi and cute couples just being cute...the quality of the production was fairly mediocre and sometime bad this season...boo hiss.
There isn't anything airing this summer that I really wanted to watch, but hey, anime is fun to have playing in the background.

Here are some new shows:

 photo gangsta1a.jpg photo gangsta1b.jpg

Gangsta. 1-2! Based on a manga, in episode 1 the mafia hire the police who in turn, hire a couple independent contractors to take care of some troublesome drug dealers. They end up also helping out a prostitute. The contractors are made up of a one-eyed blond character and a sword-wielding deaf character. This is probably the first anime series I've seen where sign language is prominently on display. It's a gritty street anime, so if you like that sort of genre, this might appeal to you.

 photo aoharu1a.jpg photo aoharu1b.jpg

Aoharu x Kikanjuu 1-2! Another anime based on a manga, the class president is an overzealous fighter of evil and is female dressed in boy's clothes. Hotaru moves next door to Matsuoka, a club host. Have I already mentions how crappy FUNimation stream quality is. The rest of this progresses somewhat like Ouran Host Club. She accidentally does damage to the club and the host gets her to repay them by playing gun survival games. So there must be a PSA somewhere in this show...but hey, it's Japan. Kids wielding guns and shooting at each other is not at all a bad idea.

 photo charlotte1a.jpg photo charlotte1b.jpg

Charlotte 1! Is about a young boy who can possess other people's bodies for 5 seconds at a time. He uses the power to get to the top of the class, into an elite high school and win the interest of a girl. He gets caught by other students who have special powers and they force him to attend their school. While episode 1 sounds pretty unoriginal, the show is well-made and there were cute & funny moments.

 photo rokka1a.jpg photo rokka1b.jpg

Rokka no Yuusha 1! This is a fantasy anime about a young man who claims to be the strongest. He interrupts a ceremonial fight, gets thrown in prison and befriends a young girl. They talk about becoming one of the six flowers and defeating some legendary demon. She turns out to be the princess and one of the six. Kudos for pretty ombre hair, but the premise is rather uninspiring.

 photo sw1a.jpg photo sw1b.jpg

Akagami no Shirayukihime 1-2! based on the manga is a sweet shoujo story about a young red-headed herbalist/pharmacist and a head-strong prince. She runs away from her hometown since the prince there wants to make her his concubine. She inadvertently meets another prince and befriends him. There are pastels and sparkles.

 photo ge1a.jpg photo ge1b.jpg

God Eater 1-2! The premise of this also doesn't sound very original, but the execution is pretty good. This is based on an RPG game. Humans live behind a wall to protect themselves from Aragami. From the brief flashbacks, it appears that humans created the monsters themselves. A young boy, Lenki Utsuki, joins the elite task force who kill the Aragami. The first episode is about him joining, training, getting a special weapon, and then disobeying orders to kill some Aragami. The animation style is a little unusual, but interesting. ufotable is the production company so I think the continuous action is what will keep people interested, since the characters themselves are absolutely not unique.

 photo jun31a.jpg photo jun31b.jpg

Junjou Romantica 3 1-2! The third season and continuation of the yaoi manga. Misaki has passed his third year of college and is approaching a time where he'll be finding a job. His brother assumes he'll be moving out of the comfort of Usagi's home. Misaki is unsure of his future. A relative of Usagi comes to visit bringing out Misaki's jealous streak. This is still a mildly cute BL anime, but after so many volumes of manga, you kinda wish the mangaka would get Misaki to accept his feelings and well, end the manga. From the opening visuals, we'll get to see the Junjou Mistake couple this season.

 photo smc26a.jpg photo smc26b.jpg

Sailor Moon Crystal 26! the end. Well, Chibi-usa and Sailor Moon defeat Nemesis and all is well. While this really can't compete with any anime made today due to the simplistic story, gaping plot holes and lackluster animation production, it was a nice nostalgic return to the franchise. Hopefully, they plan on continuing the anime since the next story arcs are definitely more interesting. ~7/10 rating~ Despite the original anime's monster-of-the day formula, the original gave more depth to the characters and the background songs were cheesy, but sweet. This version folllows the manga more accurately, but only minimally added to the overall likability. I think most people are disappointed by this reboot's poor quality.

and continuing...
Arslan Senki 13.5-15! 13.5 was a rehash of the first half the series, and episode 14 brings in new theme songs and a new battle against a very stupid prince of the neighboring country. Narsus is able to easily about to come up with a plan to defeat the army, and uses the prince to help Arslan. So far, Narsus is able to plan far enough ahead to overcome their obstacles, and Daryun is able to prevent Arslan from getting killed. It'll be interesting to see if they ever encounter any set-backs.

Happy 4th

Long weekends are so nice. Might as well post some late posts.

 photo fsnubw24 7.jpg photo fsnubw24 3.jpg

 photo fsnubw24 5.jpg photo fsnubw24 4.jpg

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works 23-25! the end. At the finale, it's Saber vs. Assasin, Shirou vs. Gilgamesh, and Rin vs. the Holy Grail blobby to save Shinji despite him trying to molest her just a couple episodes back. She even apologized to him when she thinks that they are both doomed. The final fight scene with Shirou finally mastering his powers was pretty darn fun to watch. Archer gets the final say by sneaking in from the 'dead'. I'm a little sad that Saber didn't to show off her skills at all this season...other than the final blow to the Grail. Episode 25 is basically a throw-away, but cute epilogue as Shirou and Rin go to London/'Hogwarts' to attend the school for mages. There's a nice Fate/Zero cameo. Maybe there are some other fanbait things in the episode that I don't recognize. The episode confirms Shirou's resolve to become a hero of justice despite knowing how he may end up. ~9/10 rating~ for this arc of the Fate series. This was a huge improvement over the original series in terms of animation production and story. The original where Shirou crushes on Saber was a terrible route. There was less high school drama and Rin is a better companion for Shirou. She forces him to be a better character. All of the characters are stronger and more likable in this version. ufotable did a great job with this franchise.

 photo fsnubw24 6.jpg photo fsnubw24 1.jpg

Arslan Senki 11-13! In 11, we learn that the masked man is the true heir to Pars who supposedly died in a fire when he was young. Narsus saves the life of a random bandit and who obviously becomes a fangirl. Arslan and company make it to a faithful border stronghold, but find an incoming army.

Sailor Moon Crystal 24-25! Sailor Moon has some great characters; Tuxedo Mask is not one of them...he keeps getting brain-washed. Chibi-Usa lusting over her father is not great, too. The animation quality and 80's cheesey plot holes can be bad, but nostagia-vision is fun.
 photo fsunl21.jpg

 photo fsunl21b.jpg

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works 18-22! Poor Lancer...there has to be an version of Fate/Stay where he gets to win. Archer versus Shirou continues in epic ramblings and some cool fighting. Gilgamesh finally shows his true colors, and Shinji gets what he deserves.

 photo arslan8.jpg

Arslan Senki 5-10! I like the world building as Arslan continues to gather allies and tries to figure out a way to save his kingdom. Neither Pars nor Lusitania are countries with rulers or ideals worth rooting for, so it'll be interesting to see how this works out. The humor between Narsus and Daryun begs for fanfics. In episode 10 Arslan see that freeing the slaves isn't quite the easy fix he thought.

Kekkai Sensen 6-7! Thought that the underlying plot would present itself but so far the episodes have only been mostly episodic. Still waiting for the characters to develop some. May drop this now or marathon this later.

Sailor Moon Crystal 22-23! Sailor Moon saves her friends but loses Chibi Usa and Tuxedo in the process. This part of the story is dragging a bit. Usagi's jealousy and general incompetence is a negative rather than the usual intended 'cute'.

Durarara x2 5-12! the end of the first part of season two. I decided to marathon the rest of this to pass some time and it was better as it went on. Shizuo and Celty are fun to watch. The weaknesses are Masaomi's indecisiveness and Izaya's arrogance, but episode 12 throws a twist into their bland characters. Thankfully, the second part of this starts back up in July.
Some of the spring offerings...

Vampire Holmes 1! is another 3 minute gag anime. Vampire Holmes doesn't solve crimes despite how much his assistant, Hudson, pushes him to. It's not really funny nor is it produced well.

 photo nagato2.jpg

The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan 1! is an AU spin-off of the Haruhi series in which Suzumiya Haruhi is not a character (random background street cameo instead). It's a typical shoujo anime. Yuki has a crush on Kyon and plans the literature club's Christmas party. It's quite dull actually and the production is a step down from the original series. Probably not worth the watch.

 photo rinne3.jpg

Kyoukai no Rinne 1-4! has that old-school anime charm going for it. A young girl can see dead people. She meets a cash-strapped shinigami who guides the ghosts to the afterlife. From the creator of Inuyasha, we get another cute male and female lead characters who are instantly likable. The first episode is about a cursed cell phone and the caller who left something important behind. Episode 2 explains how Mamiya Sakura can see ghosts. There's also a cute talking cat...you can't not like him.

and the decent stuff...

 photo kekkai2.jpg

Kekkai Sensen 1-5! The citizens of New York City get exposed to some sort of gas/fog and a few citizens gain powers or turn into mutant-like beings. Some are good and some of evil. Libra is an organization that suppresses the evil. A young boy joins to learn why his eyes were replaced by 'god' eyes. This show has a style like Baccano with its sometimes-jazzy music, flow to the scenes and variety of characters, but it's there's also an X-men-action feel, too. The first episode gave the viewer and good understanding of the whole story really quickly, but the plot doesn't progress too much through episode 5. The opening theme from Bump of Chicken and ending theme from Unison Square Garden are fun. I wish FUNimation's stream was sharper...or the production better. Can't tell who is to blame there.

 photo arlsan1.jpg

Arslan Senki 1-4! Arslan is the young prince of Pars, a country at war with Lusitania. Pars uses Lusitanians as slaves. Lusitanians believe in a god that teaches that all men are equal...and it's ok to kill for that belief. The King of Pars is of course a harsh, undefeated king...until episode 3. Arslan is depicted as having a very gentle heart and healthy curiosity for all people. The show is the definition of an epic war fantasy..but darn, the novels that this show is based on are not completed, so I assume the anime will be left undone. (Again, I wish FUNimation's stream was a sharper quality..yes, the pirated show is sharper.)

 photo fatestyun17.jpg

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works 13-17! back for the 2nd part of the story. Yes! My only gripe with episode 13 is the out-of-place fanboy service scene with Saber. But everything else with the return of the anime was up-to-par. Rin and Archer confront Caster only to have Archer betray Rin. We see a glimpse into Caster/Medea's past where she betrays her former master...a blond pimp. In episode 15, Illyaviel and Berserker face off against Gilgamesh and lose pretty badly. Berserker didn't really get to show off any real skill at all. Thankfully, Rin's battle with Caster and Archer versus Lancer were both lovely to watch.

 photo smc18_1.jpg

Sailor Moon Crystal 19-21! So Chibi Usa takes Sailor Moon, Venus, Tuxedo Mask and the cats to the future to save her mom. Sailor Pluto takes a swipe at them. It's so sad that the animation quality sucks. They find that Sailor Moon is Queen of Tokyo in the future. When you can live hundreds of years and have the crystal of power, I suppose becoming the Queen eventually happens.
