Actually finished this show about a month ago, but forgot to post. I doubt that this will interest most of this journal's watchers.

Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin 2-26! the end. I thought that this might focus a little on the corruption in juvenile detention centers, but the story revolves more around humiliation and endurance. I originally watched one episode because the actor, Oguri Shun, was a seiyuu. He voices the main character, Mario.

I think the show tries to portray the harsh circumstances of the lower class children of the after-WWII time period in the most extreme manner it can. You really have to be in the mood for violence to get through a lot of the show. The first half focuses on the 7 young boys in the detention center. The veteran prisoner, nicknamed An-chan, helps the other 6 young boys survive repeated beatings and rapes inflicted by the insane prison guard and perverted doctor. An-chan's kindness during that time helps them survive throughout the series.

*spoilers* By episode 8, half of them escape. An-chan sends one of them back to take care of the others. They blackmail the guard and doctor with a letter that implicates them of murder, so thus, the other half have peaceful times in prison. Everyone eventually serves their time and gets out. The insane guard gets hooked on drugs, and goes after An-chan. The doctor cooks up a plot that leaves An-chan dead. The other boys exact revenge at the halfway mark leaving the doctor and the guard broken men. The 2nd half of the series focuses on the evil people the boys meet outside of prison, and their mistakes in the so-called real world.

Mario kind of becomes the central figure at that point. Basically, if the character looks evil, 95% of the time they will do something very evil. This was definitely not a fun anime to watch. The only respite comes from the big simple guy's, Cabbage's, story. He joins the yakuza, but because he is too dumb, they don't get rid of him and actually help him find an appropriate job. Things lighten up a little more near the end as each character matures and finds his place in the world. Madhouse is great at creating unforgiving, rather uncomfortable anime. Claymore and Mouryou no Hako being a couple recent, similar productions that came to mind. That being said, some of the melodrama was so exaggerrated to the point where it became a little ridiculous at the amount of sadistic stuff thrown at the boys. Sadly, the 'soldier' boy does not get his own story arc. There are apparently 3-4 character arcs in the manga the anime didn't cover, but the anime does end at a satisfactory point. BUT Dear Japan, please try to finish up an anime story rather than telling part of it. Isn't an audience more likely to spend $xxx on a complete story? ~8/10 rating~ for a completely un-cute anime without any fanservice. Beware of beady-eyed and hitler-moustached men.
