Thought CA's Anime Expo and MD's Otakon were pretty large anime cons, but man, Paris's Japan Expo outranks and out-guests them both. They have CLAMP, Ai Yazawa, Shiori Furukawa, AND Natsuki Takaya so far. And their numbers are more than 3x that of AX. Um...130,000+ otaku in cosplay stuffed in a convention center in July? How...pleasant. BTW, the French cover of Furuba is blinding.

Speaking of pleasant things...
Summer list of new interesting anime:

Spice and Wolf S2 - I thought the first season was dull at times, but maybe they'll get somewhere this time.

Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei - Hiroshi Kamiya's goodbye was a lie. They'll keep milking this forever...not that that is a bad thing.

Bakemonogatari - sci-fi/ghost/spirit story originally by NisioIsin

Umineko no Naku Koro ni - a murder mystery originally by Ryukishi07, but produced by Studio Deen. :(

AND the CUTEST and oddest trailer I've seen in a long time.
My Coffee Samurai: My Boyfriend is a Vending Machine - a Korean cartoon which will be aired in Japan (hence the jp subs).

My Coffee Samura LOL. But if someone subs it I'll watch it. Hell, if someone torrents the raws I'll watch it.

Also, Bakemonogatari sounds pretty cool.

I'm going to Otakon, but Japan Expo is just way beyond the league of even AX this year.

I was thinking about going to Japan Expo. A week in France is pretty inexpensive these days and I have the time, but spending 3 days at a con in hopes to see a mangaka or get an autograph...is probably not worth it especially after I found out how they do the raffle. Platinum, Gold and Silver ticket holders can draw 4, 3, 2 times while the regular ticket holders can draw 1 time...and with 130k people and foreigners not being able to buy upper level tickets...the chances of getting to do anything worthwhile is slim. I'll save a trip to France for another vacation. :)

Been to Otakon once. Pretty nicely sized and easy to get to. Yummy restaurants around there, too. :)

WHAT foreigners aren't allowed to buy special tickets!? Oh for god's sake France, could you be any more xenophobic? No wonder France and Japan get along so well.

I think Otakon has gotten even bigger than it was the last time I attended, which was 2005. I'm interested to actually be interested in a part of the con other than the dealers' room. One of my friends is getting a hotel room, it's $40 on Greyhound, who knows if I'll have the chance again = why not?

Maybe 'foreigners' isn't the right word. If you wanted to preorder tickets, you couldn't order the special tickets online if you were not in France. They all sold out within a couple days anyway. I suppose they do show favoritism to their citizens..or those with access to French addresses. :/

Just saw your post. Sorry for your loss and I'm glad you have so many future plans already. I hope you get to IUC as planned. :)

I can't plan past this weekend. Get tires rotated, get shish-kabobs from place across the street.

Thank you.

I suppose I'm exaggerating (as usual)--I think it's pretty common to restrict tickets to such things to mailing addresses in-country. I remember there was a lot of that for the 2008 Olympics, for example.
