Worse than that anime ending...

(the above pic is not The Boy Who Lived...it's from The Lion of March)
Got the book via Amazon, was poisoned by my boss and mother, so as soon as I felt better, I started reading Book 7...the end...woe...
I was wrong about JKR not writing bad fanfiction.
Well, it wasn't all that bad.
1 out of 3 ppl on my flist liked it...so far.

Anyone else have little squiggly lines on the pages as if the printer had dust on it?
The good, the bad and the ugly...
+ Easy book to read (5 hours tops with snack breaks)
+ with enough 12 year old innuendo to make me snicker alot
+ and enough violence to raise an eyebrow (How much editing will the movie director make?)
- but like the previous couple books, I rolled my eyes at many a random sentence. JKR is not winning any prizes for elegant writing. (at least I hope not)
- Harry's intelligence is still annoyingly substandard.
+ Harry x Dobby....*criessss*
+ Minor character redeem themselves...woot.
- Harry continues to believe Skeeter, wtf?.
+ Snape is the epitomy of hot...even with the crush.
- but JKR killed off EVERYTHING SINGLE interesting character in the whole series. probably to prevent anyone from thinking about sequels and making it hard for fanfic writers to spawn off simple continuations.
- Nobody was gay.
+ though hints were still there
- even if the said characters are dead.
- What's with Voldemort gliding everywhere?
- Wish Harry developed a little more on his own.
- someone tell me the Epilogue was a joke, please? Her idea of fanfiction?
It was an enjoyable read. Some friends from college rec'ed the series right after Book 3 came out. I thought they were nuts. They had crushes on Harry...which was probably perverse since he was only 11 at the time. They only convinced me to read it when they said their parents were reading it. Curiousity got to me.
I enjoyed the imaginative characters, fun magical items and nostalgic feeling of reading a children's book. I continue to enjoy the funny fanfics and nice (usually japanese) fanart that invaded the web due to the series. There are plenty of fantasy books similar to this with surprisingly similar specific magical things, but because of the simplistic way JKR plots each story, HP seems more accessible. On the other hand, it did seem like she was trying to cram too much in. There's something about her writing in Books 5-7 that didn't mesh well; too many things to pull together and then a clumsy, contrived solution, unanswered items?...maybe I'll like it more upon re-reading the whole series...but that ain't happening any time soon. I thought JKR said we'd be pleasantly surprised by the end. Little did she know that that was the most unimaginative ending we'd already thought of.
ETA: I'm glad Harry saved the world with love (even if that part didn't specifically refer to him)...and got to be naked.

Date: 2007-07-22 09:05 pm (UTC)I think I had a gut reaction to not liking it at the very end because months ago, I ran across a someone reccing a bad fanfic where Harry's children were named Albus, James and Lily...and I think there was a Rose in there. I should find it again for laughs. I'm sure the author now feels like a genius.
Harry = Jesus in the end only? I think

I think I'll go listen to Beatles music now. I've got the urge for some British love music now.
