Lesson 1 supplement
Jul. 4th, 2007 07:04 amWhat I learned from watching today's drama:
Cross-dressing will let you meet your one true love and see him naked...and get a ride on his back.

Hanazakari no Kimitachi e ~ ikemen paradise ~ episode 1 jdrama. I think the 'ikemen paradise' indicates that the show takes its own liberties on the original manga; thus, the exaggerated focus on the pretty boys. The subtitle also separates it from the twdrama.
Dorama comparisons (just random comments)~

Ashiya Mizuki - the boy who is a girl who has a weird obsession with high-jumpers. Both actresses look like boys. Ella unfortunately, may look too much like a boy. Maki's acting was surprisingly very adorable.

Sano Izumi - the taciturn high-jumper. Wu Zun was built more like a wrestler than a high jumper. Oguri Shun is built more like a high jumper and gets to be the main love interest for the first time (I think) instead of the nice guy side character who never gets the girl.

Nakatsu Shuichi - the soccer player who thinks he is becoming gay. The tw version ranged from funny to ridiculous. Let's hope the jdrama version can also pull off the humor. I hope there is a more sincere relationship between Mizuki and Nakatsu in the jdrama. The twdrama made Nakatsu seem like an annoyance to Mizuki.

Kayashima Taiki - Nakatsu's roommate who can see auras and ghosts. The twdrama version was creepy and seemed like a tag-a-long. The jdrama version is very attractive and I think fanfic writers will love slashing him and Nakatsu after the first episode. He was one of my fav characters in the manga.

Umeda Hokuto - the gay school doctor. Uh, both live-action versions are sadly not attractive. The twdrama version made me cringe. The jdrama version seems better, but still not quite like the original.

Nanba Minami - the playboy dorm leader. The twdrama version always had a pink sweater drapped over his shoulders. The jdrama version has better fashion sense and is more enthusiastic.

Senri Nakao - the gay boy who likes Nanba. uh, both are frighteningly gay.

Megumi Tennouji - the karate-fixated dorm leader. Both live-action versions act the part, but are not as hot as the manga version.

Oscar M. Himejima - The jdrama version looks way too old to be in high school.

Ikemen paradise has some notable additions to the story such as the female principal who simply reminds me of a lame version of the vice principal from the Nobuta jdrama. The clique from Blossom Gakuen's role as the protector of the pretty boys is also new. They are the obligatory squeeing fangirl clique. Episode one quickly introduced everyone and sped through the dorm competition in the form of a marathon. Mizuki gets hurt. Sano takes her to the doctor's office. The doctor finds out her secret.
About the production: The background music is the basic cute pop music. The lighting and stuff like that isn't outstanding, but is better than the tw production that had problems with sun glare. The setting seems more cramped than the tw version. I guess the buildings are just smaller. All in all, I'll look forward to watching this.

Date: 2007-07-04 03:13 pm (UTC)Awesome comparison. I couldn't really sit through the kdrama though cause of the main character. Dunno why exactly, just didn't like the poor girl.

Date: 2007-07-09 07:16 am (UTC)i think maki makes a great mizuki. they did pretty well casting the top 3.
did you notice the doctor has gray-blue eyes? contacts? senri nakao doesn't look as pretty as i'd expected ... what's up with all that eyeliner?
i bet the hairstylists had to work really hard to come up with a different style for each boy.

Date: 2007-07-10 12:01 am (UTC)The actor playing Senri Nakao seemed too big for the part...ah well, he also played the gay guy in Nodame...maybe they cast him because of that.
