Death In a Black Arm

....is the title of Zombie Powder's first volume which is oddly missing on the cover of Viz's english version. I guess if that's the only edit, thankful I should be.

Reasons to read Zombie Powder by Kubotite:
+ The cover almost looks like the japanese version. The japanese has a tiny subtitle "D.I.B.A Death In a Black Arm" next to the main title...which is a fun subtitle in my opinion. Viz's does not have that and also, the background scribble is different. I don't see anything in the japanese one that would call for a change, but hey, not a big thing. (amazon has the japanese cover on its site..hm?)
+ The translation flows alright. There are a few american colloquialisms thrown in, but it's not horrid as in Viz's Naruto and Tokyopop's titles.
+ Gamma Akutabi, C.T. Smith, John Elwood Shepard, Wolfgangina Lalla Getto are great name choices.
+ Gamma has a mullet.
+ Gamma has a chainsaw sword.
+ Gamma is afraid of women's breasts (seen in volume 2).
+ Plenty of action (and violence) and some humor.
+ It was recommended by
oryssein.
+ The main characters are slightly less standard and boring than Ichigo, Orihime, Ishida, Chad and Rukia.
+ 7.99 is less than one hour of work.
Reasons to hestitate:
- Viz's choice in big, bold, ugly font for the whole thing. (ok, it's a moot point since there are worse out there.)
- Kubotite stopped at four volumes due to lack of popularity or some other reason and now writes something called "Bleach". Volume 4 sorta wraps up a storyline. I suspect that parts of the story were too similar to other manga which may be the reason for its lack of popularity and discontinued state.
Quick summary:
+ Gamma, Smith, Elwood and Wolfina are looking for the 12 Rings of the Dead to obtain Zombie Powder which can bring back the dead or make one immortal. The setting is similar to Trigun and Outlaw Star, but I think this is easier to get into. mullets are cool.
something to look into later: Bartender, an anime series?
