ebert's review of howl's moving castle seems less than stellar...not great for academy standings..i guess.

he gives it 2.5 stars. he seems to have focused on the wrong things. why does he mention shape-shifters so often? howl's a wizard. yeah, he looks like a gay ice-skater with a technicolored pink coat, but a wizard. not just a shape-shifter. that makes him sound like an alien. he calls madame suliman a "grotesque sorceress"...ummm...she looked like a normal old woman to me. the witch of the waste was the grotesque one. oh yeah, when ebert first posted the review he recalled nikki of the delivery service..it has since been corrected...ha ha. ebert also claims "sophie never quite seems to understand and inhabit this world, " which misses the point entirely. she forces herself into the world without compromising her spirit, personality or anything and she understands what is going on quite well. i guess i'm bringing knowledge from the book into the review. she understands the world enough that...*spoilers* she becomes a witch herself...or at least a magic user.

anyway, all the voices matched up quite nicely with the japanese counterparts.....except the transition from young sophie to old wasn't as nice as the japanese seiyuu AND christian bale delivered his lines like a pervert or batman rather than casually like a flirt from wales. some of the dialogue occasionally sounded weird. disney scripted the story so almost everything was explained...i don't think i had that feeling when i watched the japanese one.

final comment on the movie...*spoilers* howl is funny. sophie saves his life, declares her love, saves calcifer yada yada....and he's like 'i'm in total awe of your new haircolor, which brand of haircolor did you use, which salon did you go to?'. remember the end of ff8? with that freaky smile and the kiss on the balconey of the flying thing? anyway, howl's moving castle was more entertaining than princess mononoke, but less well-scripted and well put together than his preceding movies. 8/10 rating.

then for more christian bale fun, we saw batman begins. it was alot better than the ones preceding it. the setting and such were nicely done. yes, it was a bit slow...mostly in the beginning when he was training. yes, i laughed at all the batman dorkiness..including the batman voice. how was christian bale? just a bit better than if they'd cast keanu reeves as batman. the actor who played the scarecrow had the best lips ever! almost as nice a goldie hawn's. anyway, it wasn't remarkable and it wasn't awful. it certainly was not scary. the scarecrow gas didn't give people what they feared...unless they all feared really bad b movies. (personally, i thought the 2 movies michael keaton was in captured the right weird batman mood...even though keaton himself was never really *the* batman). 7/10 rating.

also saw hitch. sis wanted to rent it. very sappy romantic comedy. don't rent it ever. was not very funny. dialogue was atrociously retarded. 6/10 rating.

AND saw ocean's 12...being a billion steps ahead of someone doesn't really make the plot all that brilliant. only one really funny part. 7/10.

...and saw the aviator. fastforwarded through most of it. boring, but lovely colors in the beginning of the movie. brilliant peach, green-blue and red. 6/10.
