don't go into the light!

Been busy watching other shows, but recently got back into this show which is one of the best historical dramas I've seen (dragging my feet on it since it feels like it might have a depressing end).

Painter of the Wind 8-11! The king orders the painting of his official royal portrait in an effort to exert power over his whiny, old-fashioned cabinet (and his overbearing mother). The Queen (his mother...probably another title should be used) brings in a rival artist to face Tam-won who is obviously favored by the King. Episode 8-9 were cute when Tam-won teaches Yoon-bok how to draw portraits and contemplates his/her penname. The portrait competition was pretty good. I expected the subject to be blind, but I guess I wasn't too far off. Tam-won and Yoon-bok of course, win the priviledge of doing the King's portrait and live together in the palace while doing so. The bandage scene was so funny when Tam-won uses Yoon-bok's chest bandages for shower purposes. There is still a squeaky reaction to the mild flirting between the Tam-won and Yoon-bok; their age difference -- 20 years at least.
Conflicts in this story arise when the high ranking court artist become jealous, and protest against Tam-won and Yoo-bok's works and abilities. The guys plot to mess up the portrait of the king by adding junk to the ink. It's pretty interesting to see how the show portrays the processes of producing art of the past.

One of the side plots is that surrounding Yoon-bok's brother. He had sacrificed his position with the court artists for his 'brother', and took a lower position as a paint maker. He actually knows the truth of her gender, and has a bit of a crush. He creates a red ink for Yoon-bok, but sacrifices his health through his carelessness in making of the ink. The poisonous nature of the ink-making process causes him to hallucinate and have a fatal accident. It's a shame to lose such a caring character. Don't go into the light dude!
