seichanDeath Note live-action movie! I'd forgotten that this was scheduled to be aired on tv. yay for tv. How does this interpretation present the manga? Well, rather nicely. There are a few interesting differences which I'll point out so *spoilers* ahead.
I have to admit I found some of the movie's pacing a little tedious; even fell asleep at one point. That was due to a lack of dramatic music and interesting camera views. As for how the actors portrayed the characters: Light seemed evil from the first time you see him. This is possibly due to that crooked fang in his mouth. He never acted the good student role successfully. I think the audience already has knowledge of his character, so the movie gives him the dark twist with him first, betting with his friends on a basketball game with is girlfriend looking on disapprovingly and then him consorting in yakuza bars. He kills the yakuza guy who threatened him. He never once appears totally sincere when he is supposed to.
L was spot-on. The others and Misa are pretty close to what you'd imagine them to be. Ryuk was really interesting to look at. She didn't blend in much since the use of CGI was obvious, but the outdoor scenes really looked nice with Light and Ryuk. The flying scenes were picturesque. There are little differences in the story including the place where Light meets Ryuk and Lind L. Tailor not being hot, but those details are inconsequential.
Overall, the film is worth watching, but it could have used something extra to get you by the slow areas. The film ends at the place where Light joins the investigation, meets L and where Misa gets her Death Note.
