When the museum reopened Friday after a 10-month security overhaul, several hundred invited guests waited up to a half-hour each to pass through two airport-style metal detectors, an X-ray machine, an optical ticket reader, a turnstile and a double set of one-way security doors. Inside, all of Munch's pictures were framed behind glass and bolted to the wall. hm...so those docents who yell at you if you have a jacket tied around your waist or if you stare at a painting too long or if you are within 5 feet of a painting let someone walk in and take a painting off the wall? thus, leading to all that? man, that's the worst thing you can do to an artlover. stick thick glass over top the work so you can't see it. the first 5 security things aren't enough? why not hire competent security people. or put security features behind the painting.

I'm with you - just finished reading that article on the Times myself, and how horrible. I saw a van Gogh/Gauguin a few years ago, and what made it so great was standing this close to the paintings and seeing the texture of the paint on the canvas. It would have sucked if the paintings had been stuck lifeless behind glass. And no one managed to steal any paintings from the van Gogh exhibit, lack of glass notwithstanding.
