More clanging of swords

Gotta love a show where characters want to eat each other...

Claymore 12-23! Clare meets the current No. 2 who is the insane and oh-so-surprisingly named Ophelia. Irene, the previous No. 3, when Clare was still human saves Clare from Ophelia's violent tendencies. Ophelia's rage at being beaten pushes her over the edge...and she now wants to eat some guts. Clare who lost an arm, gets a chance to learn from Irene. Irene is the 'cool' character. She was able to hide from the organization after all this time and now gets to help power-up Clare. She also looks like an elf. But geez, are all the interesting characters going to be chopped up? Ophelia against Clare was rather humorous.

There's probably never going to be a properly made Highlander anime, but anime like this get close to that kind of show. The bagpipes might have triggers that thought. The big swords and character ego remind me of that show, too.

Episode 15 starts a new storyline as Clare looks around for Raki/Lucky. In one town, a group of Claymore are sent to get a monster. They aren't looking so hot. Clare goes to help. Very good storyline starts with letting the viewer know more about the three strongest Awakened Beings that are in the North, East and West. The male in the North has Priscilla. Clare fights the West's underling so poorly that Galatea, No 3, comes in. You have to admit that every other Claymore is a whole lot more interesting than Clare...maybe it's her bland haircut. Long elf-hair is nicer. Jeane, Galatea and Clare's fight against West's guy, Duff, was pretty intense. Jeane's awakened state was pretty. The action in this show is good and I'm guessing all that sexual symbolism and stuff is intentional...well, it's a show where all the warriors are females...ha.

Episode 18 quickly moves Clare to the North where she and several other Claymores are assigned to get rid of a few Awakened ones. Not quite so fun for them, but it was a learning experience. Raki's encounter was rather predictable. I thought he might be turned into a Yoma or meet Priscilla...he meets Priscilla. Easly of the North is predictably hot...in his human & awakened form and so is his subordinate, Rigardo. There's the tiny bit of fanservice for the female viewers. Episode 21 is where the fur starts to fly...or guts. And how many others thought Clare's speedy legs were funny when she kept running into things? But really, her fight with Rigardo was pretty good. With episode 23, I'm all caught up.

It looks like the anime will finish with this Northern story while the manga keeps going on and on. --So I continued with the manga. The drawing style is pretty standard with traditional lines and shadowing. Earlier, all the Yoma were kinda ugly. Now that we have the strongest Awakened Ones named, we get to see some pretty characters and their pretty monsters forms. I don't really grasp the unique power of Priscilla. She seems to want her dead family back, but her awakened state was the result of Theresa being stronger than her. I guess she is powerful just because. Her circumstances are not unsimilar to all the other Claymores and Yomas the mangaka has shown, so the mystery is why Priscilla is heading south. Also in the manga, they start to show us what the organization has done. Developing more obedient and stronger Claymores, while secretly trying to get rid of those Claymores who question them.

Anyway, under normal circumstances I wouldn't have watched this, but the lack of exciting action shows has made me itchy. The anime and manga are pure action. A weakness of the story is that it's hard to sympathize with any character since they expire so quickly and the story moves past them quickly. Another weakness is that Clare herself is a pretty dull character. Her love for Raki is eh, ew. Raki's naivete is eh. Warnings for the gore factor and the nude women factor..not that nude women bother any good otaku. 3 more anime episodes left. I guess it looks like Raki's actions will be something the anime writers will change.
