Death Note 8! wouldn't be half as charming without the food stimulus. I'm sure the writer/artist knew it would be a good distractor element. Think about yummy food instead of the plot holes. Green tea ice cream and potato chips are eaten with a pleasant fervor in this episode as the story gets to the part where L monitors Light wanking over girly magazines.
