Sailor Moon Crystal 31-39! the end of this season. Got to hand it to Usagi and Mamoru for talking about Uranus and Michiru in a open manner. Kudos to Chibi-Usa for setting them up. And it's nice that they have new vocals for the opening and a new character song for the ending. Tuxedo Kamen's ending theme is amusingly bad. Despite the occasional drop in animation quality, the quality is still better than the previous two seasons and the story content is still true to the manga. It's a darn shame that Professor Tomoe does not have the maniacal laughter he had in the original anime. He's bland in this series. ~8/10 rating~ for the nice upgrade in this anime and decent production of the manga. The original anime actually did a better job on the character development with this arc especially with Professor Tomoe.

 photo bokunohero 12.jpg

Boku no Hero Academia 4-13! the end of season one. In the first few episodes, we learn about the students and teachers. Midoriya and Bakugo get to face off, and in their own way, reconcile. Hopefully, they mature beyond the crybaby and bully personalities in the next season. The climax of the season is when a group of villians infiltrate the school to kill off All Might, the No. 1 symbol of peace. ~7/10 rating~ the anime did not live up to the hype as most of the characters had cookie-cutter anime personalities and the plot again, we've seen before and done better before. Naruto, Soul Eater, Shingeki no Kyojin all had more unique school settings. And One-Punch Man and Tiger & Bunny had much more amusing hero vs. villian worlds. On the positive side, this had no competition in the genre this season, and each episode flew by quickly.

 photo flying witch12.jpg

Flying Witch 4-12! the end. There's no conflict or climax to this anime. It's a nice slice-of-life anime to put on in the background while doing something else. If Harry Potter was about Harry living in the country occasionally learning a bit of magic, you'd have this. ~6/10 rating~ for simple and cute, but wouldn't want to watch reruns.

Magi: Sinbad no Bouken 1-8! Sinbad had his own manga and OVA spinoff and now has a proper tv series. This is good, because he was one of the more powerful and charismatic characters in Magi. We already know from the original Magi series that Sinbad captures seven Dungeons, so it's fun to watch a show where we know the hero will win big. Episode 1 shows us how his father dies and episode 2-3 is a rehash of the ONA where Sinbad conquers his first dungeon. 4-6 is about his capture of the Dungeon at Imuchakk. Sinbad learns about the trade business from the King of Balbadd in episodes 7-8.

 photo Book_of_Murder_Poster_1.png

Kuroshitsuji: Book of Murder OVA 1-2! I had forgotten about these movies. This takes place after the Book of Circus arc. The Queen orders Ciel to host a banquet for a lord and several other high-class nobles during which several murders take place. This is the mangaka's fanfiction-like take on a Sherlock Holmes mystery in which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and a Jeremy Brett-like character star. Like a Sherlock mystery, a lot of emphasis is place on the explanation of how the murders were done. ~7/10 rating~ There were definitely some slow spots in this so-so story. The viewers would never believe Sebastion was dead, so the suspense or mystery never built up. Looking forward to movie, Book of the Atlantic, since this was one of the stronger story arcs from the manga....but sad that it won't be out until 2017.

 photo bakemono.jpg

Bakemono no Ko (The Boy and the Beast) jmovie! Also got around to watching this movie directed by Mamori Hosoda (Wolf Children). It seems that this is takes place in the same world as the Wolf Children. A young boy finds himself a student of a lazy beast in the Beast World. Both boy and beast mature and become stronger in many ways. ~7/10 rating~ Fun, but forgettable movie. The antagonist, the Sasuke-like character, was too predictable.

 photo akito5a.jpg photo akito5b.jpg

Code Geass: Akito the Exiled 4-5! the end of the OVA/movies. The tv series ended in 2008, so having these OVAs released on a rather uneven schedule slowly afterwards killed much of the hype surrounding the series. On the other hand, the quality of the production is quite stunning to watch. If that's what took them so long to release the episodes, it may have been worth it to get the visual candy. The mech battles were great despite me not liking the mechs-on-skates design. The plot and characters were not as strong. They really could have trimmed much of the complexity and the number of characters. The last two episodes showed us the contrast between Shaing's geass and Leila's geass and their affect on Akito. It also ended the war between EU and Brittania. Joining the gypsies seems more like fanservice than actual character development, so those last scenes were rather odd in the scheme of things. ~7/10 rating~ for some lovely mech fights. While the whole arc seemed to parallel the original Code Geass story, the story and characters weren't as compelling.
...that I watched last year and had on my list to post about....

 photo akito2.jpg

Code Geass: Akito the Exiled, The Wyvern Divided! the second of 4 OVAs is once again full of pretty cool mecha action. It's nice to see Lelouch and Suzaku even if Lelouch is not quite himself. Akito has an unsurprising family connection with the enemy. And we see how he was geassed which was sorta like Suzaku...though 'die' makes him more determined to live and influences his comrades to fight insanely hard...just a tad confusing there. The weakness of these OVAs is still the characters. Akito is the stoic soldier. Layla is the leader to whom everyone looks up, but she is inconsistent and resorts to the weak female stereotype too often. The other characters are just fillers so far. ~7/10 rating~ Two more OVAs to go.

 photo budd1.jpg

Tezuka Osamu's Buddha: The Beautiful Red Desert! I saw a promo poster for this movie at a temple in Japan a few years back. Siddhartha was definitely portrayed as a pretty boy. This movie portrays Siddhartha's journey as he strives to find his place in the world or make the world a better place. You see him as a privileged prince of the Shakya tribe whose father keeps a tight rein on his activities. He gets educated, trained in the army, and married through his father's wishes. He sees injustice in the world and decides to run away to become a monk at the end. There are other side characters whose stories show the sufferings of the lower classes. The movie is somewhat gritty in its violence and subject matter. The animation is so-so. The appeal of the movie is mostly Tezuka Osamu's attempt at making Buddha's story an epic one. There's something in the execution or production that isn't quite convincing, but still, the subject matter is interesting. ~7/10 rating~The 2nd movie is slate for release in Japan next month.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka: Hajimari no Monogatari & Eien no Monogatari jmovies! the first two movies are recaps of the tv anime. I recall Madoka and the other girls being incredibly angsty to the point of annoying and whiny. This hasn't changed, but the pacing of the movie is that such it isn't too painful to watch again. I still like Mami, her gun tricks, and her death. I also still like the big reveal regarding the magical girls and witches. That moment still reminds me of Shoujo Kakumei Utena. ~7/10 rating~ Hope the third movie is better.

Utakoi 12-13! the end. Episode 12 was another failed love story as was episode 13. Teika's story was disappointingly the same as all the others. He was more amusing as the narrator. Anyway, the thirteen episode series about historical love poetry was filled with some nice eye-candy, but each story was rather forgettable. ~6/10 rating~

Photobucket

Code Geass: Akito the Exiled 1 The Wyvern Has Landed! the first of four movies that tells of the EU (European Union/Universe)'s fight against Brittania; a side story to the Code Geass tv series. Akito, an Eleven/Japanese, is a skilled soldier in a division of the EU army led by Layla, a Britannian aristocrat adopted by an EU family. The movie didn't really get into the Britannian characters, but a rebellious Eleven gang who is recruited by Layla gets some air time. Akito has obviously been geassed, and another character who shares his family name, Hyuga, has the power of the geass. C.C. shows up in the preview for the next movie and hopefully, their geass's are explained. The action scenes with the Knightmares are pretty smooth and the bgm is characteristically Yoko Kanno...jazzy. The overall tone is much more restrained than the tv series and fairly serious throughout the hour. Both Akito and Layla do not reveal their true motivations yet.

Hunter x Hunter 2012 48-49! Gon and Killua get an education about antiques and swindling. And then they get caught by the Phantom Troupe.

Code Geass: Nunnally in Wonderland OVA! cracktastic. I was skeptical on how enjoyable this might be since the trailer feature a bunch of still shots, but there was a mix of short animation clips, and a really funny fight scene involving Suzaku. It's pretty fun all around. Lelouch's sister-complex was cute, too.

Natsuyuki Rendezvous 4! Hazuki takes Rokka to the amusement park for a decidedly unsuccessful date; she shoots his request for sex down with a laugh. He gets drunk and allows Shimao to take over his body.

Hunter x Hunter 2012 41! First look at the new Phantom Troupe and Neon (who has blue hair this time around). Miyano Mamoru is using his unconvincing evil voice as Chrollo.

Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita 5! The fairies leave when they detect electromagnetic waves heading their way. Pion the cat girl/robot? is introduced. Not sure what is going on...

Utakoi 5! Yasuhide, Narihira and Komachi contemplate getting older and then go on a trip.

Darker Than Black - Ryuusei no Gemini 9! I'm fond of Kiko the fangirl-spreading fangirl. Good episode with a twist.

Photobucket

Naruto Shippuden 138! Nicer visuals. Anti-climactic, predictable, but interesting end to the brotherly love. I can't say that I'm fond of what Sasuke learns from this as it is a bit lame that his actions in the manga prove low intelligence, but the past two anime arcs were good (well, good characters died). I think that's enough Naruto anime until the next interesting arc.
Photobucket

Code Geass R2 25! the end. For such an obnoxious story with the most arrogant characters, Code Geass was so very enjoyable. ~9/10 rating~ minus one because I have no desire to rewatch it anytime soon--well, maybe this last episode will get another viewing. :)

Spoilers & random thoughts under cut )

Woe is me

Poor PC did not make it through the move unscathed, and is now in hopefully-miraculous-100GB-data-recovery-land-please-get-everything-in-usable-format-please.

BUT...watched some anime with sis...

Code Geass R2 24! Nunnally is way too trigger happy. Everyone else is just desperate to get the show over and done with and just fight for no apparent real reason, but this does result in some nice battle scenes.

Macross F 24! Everyone cheered as one of the main characters explodes, but is it a true death or soap opera death? Have I already mentioned that the writing for this story sucks?
...moving outta here...in 32 minutes or so. Darn me and my books..have to leave most behind for another trip. Blech..wish it weren't so hot...

Code Geass R2 23! Suzaku C.C.'s pink mech matches Lelouch's sword; they are both flamboyant and ugly. ugh..skimming is bad. sleepy.
Photobucket

Code Geass R2 22! Pizza Hut must the symbol of comradery and friendship, or Ashford Academy is simply the corporate headquarters, or Pizza Hut is so consumer-driven that they deliver in times of war. I wish I could be as smooth as Lelouch when putting in and taking out contacts from my eyes. I'm amused by the uselessness of all the Knights of Rounds. As for the episode itself, Lelouch seems to have given up on negotiating and taken to shooting dissenters. Yay for super-maid.

ETA: Cute eye-catch...and you were wondering why there was so much suzalulu?

Code Geass R2 21! So this is what X could have been if Kamui had a backbone (and a huge ego), and if the story actually contained action. Nunnally turned out to be Kotori and Charles was Fuuma..sorta. Side note: if Syaoran ever failed to save his princess, he'd turn into Suzaku. That's enough of the obvious-as-hell CLAMP parallels...though Yasha-ou being Xingke is so lovely even if they have the same tree-stump personalities. Loved the episode with its unexpected twist. Thought the parallels between Charles and Lelouch's motivations were interesting. So Lelouch triumphs, but C.C.'s not-so-happy face makes me think Lelouch might get ousted in the end. I'm wondering what Schneizel wants; outside of the fact that he'd rather be the one in control.
Photobucket
Code Geass R2 20! Gotta love random plot twists...though maybe the hairstyle should have given it away? Also, gotta love the Knight of One's sword. too obvious? yeah right. (btw, Knight of One x Super-Maid would be a hot couple.)

All the other episode 20's, a 21 and an 8 )

I wish the Borders/Amazon partnership hadn't went away. C'mon, Borders' online prices and inventory stink next to Amazon. Anyway, went to the bookstore to browse a new short novel and 'likely in store' is an unacceptable inventory status. Don't you use computers to scan inventory? So, it's not in the section it says it should be at, and it's not on an endcap or display table...so where is it 'likely' to be? eh, maybe should have asked someone, but a big otaku-ish salesperson was spouting off the virtues of manga to some customers, and it didn't seem like she'd stop anytime soon. ~So I went home to eat a donut. mmm.

Have a manga post coming up...mmm donuts..I mean, manga.
Photobucket

Code Geass R2 19! With all siblings on his side gone, does that mean no more sibling 'love' discussions? That particular character's death was expected, and I'm surprised at all the tearing up in the community. Still waiting for Xingke to kick the bucket...but maybe his death would be too obvious and the writers won't off him? ah well. Hope C.C. gets to be more active soon, but judging by the preview, not next week.

Code Geass R2 18! was basically a mess of a war. Nina's FLEIJA/Freya-bomb was surprisingly small and slow, but it did blow up some important characters. I hope Sayoko is still there. She's my favorite super-hero-maid character. I'd cosplay her if I was a cosplayer-type of gal.
Code Geass R2 17! It seems to be too early for Lelouch and Suzaku to live in wedded bliss. Decided to write more...Kallen's chest was hiked up to her chin. She looked so weird. Gundam 00 CM + Uverworld = smoochies.

Antique 5! Tachibana decides to advertise by setting up a booth at the mall's bakery fair. Ono and Chikage have to get over their stage fright while Eiji tries to work by himself. It's a feel-good episode.
Photobucket
Allison & Lillia 14! With new opening and ending visuals, the Lillia and Treize arc starts now. As expected Lillia, Allison & Wil's daughter, and Treize, Benedict & Fi's son, are a couple even though Lillia is going through a not-liking-boys phase in the episode. Interestingly, young Allison and Lillia's seiyuu are the same, Nana Mizuki. Older Allison's seiyuu is Houko Kuwashima. I don't think her voice changed in the previous episode, but it is noticeably different now. In this episode we find that Treize and Wil/Travas know each other's secrets. Lillia is on summer vacation and takes a trip to Lartika with Treize. Again, this is charming like a children's book...though Allison hints at Lillia jumping Treize which wouldn't be a kid's book.

Photobucket
Code Geass R2 16! Best parts were C.C. being moe for her Pizza Hut and of course, Kallen pwning Suzaku. The huge United-something-or-other versus Britannia battle is coming up. Anyone notice that Great Britain wasn't even blue on that map. I guess the English abandoned the island after taking over half the world? And nobody wants Austrialia? Nina put an a-bomb in Lancelot's arse somewhere. Again, the Knight of One needs more screentime please.

Hurrah for yaoi anime getting another season in October. Miyagi and Shinobu never got to consummate their relationship in the first season.
Photobucket
Code Geass R2 15! can't wait til C.C. rediscovers Pizza Hut. This episode reveals C.C.'s background story, and the geass contract which vaguely reminded me of Tokyo Babylon. *spoilers* She has one of two true wishes--to die or to know true love. I think the 'to die' part is what is clearly perceived...but the second is extrapolated by her original geass problems.

Photobucket
Nabari no Ou 15! Have to admit that Koichi is getting even more interesting. Um, they are fast running out of manga material...*cries* Another unfinished story.

Photobucket
Macross F 15! was mostly a flashback with 'mysterious' voices narrating. There was a musical scene where Ranka and Sheryl were serenading Alto with 'What about my star' though the cuteness was undercut by cheap animation. When will the Macross F musical be announced...ha.

ETA: the new 'it' anime dance? probably not, but watching both videos at once is fun. (megumi's video is one second behind the instructional video.)

Photobucket
Antique 3! Chikage joins the cast...um, the second half was really gay...like Barney gay. I was almost embarrassed to be watching it.

Bounen no Xamdou/Xam'd Lost Memories 1! is about ordinary boy who gets alien(?) powers.
Quick impression and summary~ almost fell asleep, but the last part was good. The woman with the glasses looks intriguing.

Tried to watch Strike Witches, but there's only so many panties a girl can take in a span of 5 minutes. I'm not even attempting Sekirei.

Code Geass R2 14! Surprising how Lelouch is quick to recover and forgive Rolo for Shirley's death. They all go to V.V.'s geass cult/lab/city to massacre everyone. With so much death on his hands, I can't imagine Lelouch getting a happy end. Rolo's outfit is ghey.
